Chapter Nine

Lany

I went about my duties with a heavy heart. I knew the hostage situation had ended because I had seen the mayor and his daughter being escorted from the building. I had wanted to stay and watch Sal and his men walk out, but my uncle ordered me to start contacting people and getting reports of the incident.

Hearing that one of the SWAT team members had been shot almost killed me. I was frozen in place as I waited to hear if they were alive or dead, and then who it was.

Things didn’t get any easier from there.

By the time my personal cell phone rang, I was so anxious I could hardly concentrate. “Police Commissioner Harris’s office,” I answered automatically. “How may I help you?”

“Lany?”

“Sal?” I breathed as I stilled.

“Hey, caro.”

Oh man, oh man, oh man.

Tears gathered in my eyes. “Are you okay?”

“I got nicked, but nothing a couple of stitches didn’t take care of.”

My stomach rolled. “You got shot?”

“I didn’t duck,” Sal said, as if that explained it all.

My mouth felt dry. I had to swallow before I could speak again. “Where are you?”

“I’m just leaving the emergency room now. I wanted to give you a quick call before you heard I was shot.”

“I already heard.”

Sal’s voice deepened, vibrating through me. “I’m fine, caro. I promise.”

“You got shot,” I snapped in a tight voice.

How was that fine?

“I promise you, I am fine. It was just a nick. The doctor closed it up with a few stitches. He’s not even keeping me.”

I pulled in a shaky breath. “What about infection? Don’t they need to watch out for that?”

“Baby, this isn’t the first time I’ve been shot, and I doubt it will be the last.”

I didn’t like hearing that.

“As long as I keep it clean and take the antibiotics they prescribed me, I’ll be fine.”

“Can I see you?”

I desperately needed to see Sal.

“I’m headed back to the bunkhouse now. I need to check in and then write out my report. How about I pick you up after that and we can go get some dinner?”

“The bunkhouse?”

Sal’s chuckle rumbled through the phone and straight into me. “That’s what we call the station we work out of.”

“The one over on Fifth Street?”

I had looked.

“Yep.”

I glanced down at the stack of papers I still needed to file and then up to the clock on the wall. It was hard to believe it was only three o’clock in the afternoon. So little time had gone by.

So much had changed in so little time.

“Lany?”

“Sorry…um…why don’t you call me when you’re all done?”

“I can do that.” I could hear the smile in Sal’s voice.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I am. I even have the next couple of days off.”

“Oh?” I was very interested in that. I had a little bit of sick time. “Want to come to my place? I’ll let you play in my pool.”

“I’m not supposed to get my wound wet.”

“You can soak your feet.”

Sal chuckled.

“I’ll make you dinner.” I had already promised to do that, but I’d promise Sal the moon if he agreed to come over.
